VICE-President Prof. Gilbert Bukenya has said Buganda Kingdom committed a mistake to reject the proposed regional government.
“I am surprised that Mengo rejected the formation of the regional tier and yet it was designed to support it. Mengo thrives on fundraising to raise items like office stationary and other projects,” he said.
Bukenya praised former Katikkiro Joseph ssemwogerere for the way he handled the talks between the Government and Mengo.
He said Buganda would lag behind in development for failure to embrace the regional government, adding that other regions had embraced it.
Addressing NRM leaders at Masaka Social Centre on Wednesday, Bukenya asked Parliament Speaker Edward Ssekandi to sensitise the masses on the regional tier system.
He said an elected Katikkiro would be accountable to the people.
Bukenya said the government would release sh147b for regional government programmes after elections.
He said regional governments would manage referral hospitals and education institutions.
