PRESIDENTIAL candidate Col. Kizza Besigye ended the campaign trail on Tuesday by rallying residents of President Yoweri Museveni’s home district, Kiruhura, to votefor FDC.

The campaigns closed on Tuesday, ahead of today’s presidential and parliamentary polls.

Besigye addressed rallies in the three districts of Kiruhura, Mbarara and Bushenyi as he wound up the trail.

“I supported Museveni before you people began supporting him. I voted for him in 1980 under UPM while you supported DP. You denied Museveni a vote at that time. And it disturbs me when I hear you say ‘we cannot leave Museveni’. You are not being truthful,” Besigye told a rally at Kazo sub-county headquarters.

“UPM stood for clean leadership, unity and peace. Today, only a few individuals are benefiting from government. I ask you to vote for the FDC because we have the key,” he said.

Besigye travelled in a Mitsubishi Pajero with no Police escorts. He was accompanied by Richard Kaijuka, Yona Kanyomozi and MP Maj. John Kazoora. Also present at the rallies were EU election observers. In Kiruhura he addressed rallies at Kagongi Kazo and Nyakasharara.

Kiruhura is considered an NRM stronghold.

In Mbarara, Besigye addressed rallies in Rubindi and Bwizibwera in Kashari and asked residents to support Kazoora for MP. Kazoora faces NRM’s Urban Tibamanya.

“It is Kazoora who can stand up to Museveni and tell him, ‘this is wrong,’ unlike Tibamanya who is a yes-man,” Besigye said.

His last rally was at Nsiika, Buhweju in bushenyi. Besigye’s rallies in Kiruhura were attended by people clad in yellow NRM party T-shirts.

He made stop-overs in several trading centres, where he was welcomed by cheering FDC supporters while others in yellow T-shirts flashed NRM’s thumbs-up symbol.

Besigye said, “President Museveni has not achieved even a 10th of what Milton Obote did. Why should we then add him five years? Poverty has increased.”
