SIR – Now that the elections have ended and President Museveni has taken the lead, I think it is important that he borrows a leaf from the positive aspects of Col Kizza Besigye’s manifesto for building this country. Besigye scored about 37% of the votes, which is certainly no mean feat for someone who has had to divide much of his campaign time between court and rallies. It shows that people truly had trust in what he had laid down for them had he won the election. In the 2001 elections, many of the things Besigye had highlighted in his manifesto were implemented by President Museveni. This should also be done this time to satisfy the over two million Ugandans who rallied behind Besigye. President Museveni must learn to be accommodative of the opposition, which he willingly freed through the 2005 referendum. He must not look at the opposition as enemies but as counterparts in development. He must look behind and understand why people in Northern and Eastern Uganda, save for the Central, did not support him. This was not necessarily because they hate him; it was another way of putting across the point that they have been ignored for the last 20 or so years. The new government must come to terms with opposition leaders that are coming to Parliament and not simply use its majority to suppress their developmental ideas.
