STEPHEN ‘Tiger Woods’ Birungi is seeking to avenge his Western Open defeat to George Olayo when he contests in this weekend’s Mbarara Open golf competition. Mbarara Golf Club chairman Edwin Tumusiime confirmed Birungi was one of the Kampala players who will be out to challenge Uganda Golf Union (UGU) stroke-play championship leader Olayo on his home course.

The Nile Breweries sponsored Birungi goes into the second round of the UGU stroke-play championship one point behind Olayo.

Four-times Uganda Open champion Birungi is hot favourite for the 2006 UGU title after his contemporaries Deo Akope, Charles Yokwe and Stephen Kasaija turned professional. Toro club’s veteran George Kituku, Entebbe’s Gerald Ayella and Shaban Lwanga from Jinja are also expected to feature prominently in the 36-hole stroke-play competition that tees off on Saturday morning.

The tournament has attracted over 100 competitors from Kampala, Mbarara, Entebbe, Jinja, Fort Portal, Kabale and Masindi.
