AS King’s College Budo prepares to mark its centenary celebrations in July this year, one of its renowned tutors, Prof. Gordon McGregor, will launch a book about one of Uganda’s oldest schools.
The book, titled King’s College Budo: A centenary History 1906-2006, is to be launched on Friday evening at Sheraton Kampala Hotel as a preamble to the celebrations.
Prime Minister Prof. Apolo Nsibambi is expected to preside over the launch that will be preceded by a public lecture by McGregor on the topic “Education for the 21st Century? What is- and what might be.”
McGregor will give an insight into what has been achieved in the first 100 years of institutional education in Uganda and what must be improved upon or avoided.
McGregor’s 386-page book is published by Fountain Publishers and Publishing Consultants Limited, Kampala. This is McGregor’s seventh book.
McGregor came to Uganda in 1959, where he first taught at Budo before lecturing at the then Makerere University College.
For his tireless efforts in the development of education in Uganda, McGregor was appointed by President Yoweri Museveni as chairman of the visitation committee for public universities in the country.
Nsibambi, an old Budonian and Prof. A.B.K Kasozi, the executive director of the National Council for Higher Education, have reviewed McGregor’s detailed book.
“Budo’s Centenary history is a book that is analytical (and) detailed.... a refreshing memoir that contains useful references and raises issues which are useful to Budo and other schools,” Nsibambi comments on the book.
Kasozi, said, “Students of the history of education should read this book…It is a micro description, at a single institutional level, of the growth of formal education in Uganda.”
