IT was never billed as a classic.
But David Kiwanuka’s sublime double somewhat matched the grade as URA FC reinforced their Confederations Cup preparations with a 2-1 win over Maji yesterday.

There are few sides in the domestic league that understand better than Maji the importance of closing out the veteran striker to the last minute. And with a goalless first half, the job had apparently been done.

However, not against a proven forward, whose instinctive abilities inside the 18-yard area speak volumes.

Kiwanuka squeezed through a couple of Maji defenders to volley home the first on 61 minutes before nodding home the second from the tightest of angles.

Barnabas Mayende’s strike could only serve as a consolation.

Meanwhile, SC Villa, who had an exciting four-match winning run halted in a 2-1 defeat to rivals Express last week, are primed to stage a backlash of sorts against sixth-placed Kinyara.

In that epic tie, Villa gave away a first half goal lead, after so much dominance.

Coaches Ibrahim Kirya and Paul Nkata will remind their charges that in spite of defeat, they still proved their knack and character and that it is games like one against Kinyara that provide kick-start seasons.

At Nakivubo, army side Simba will certainly prove a big scalp for Super Cubs, for whom few will fancy as their previous games have shown they can neither defend nor score.

In seven matches since making their top-flight debut, Cubs are yet to score a single a goal.
