AFTER all the dilly-dallying and consistent postponing, it looks like Miss MUBS 2006 is finally taking shape.

Initially slated for March 25, the pageant has been set for April 7. The venue has also been changed from Kabira Country Club in Bukoto to Kati Kati Restaurant on Lugogo by-pass.

For an entrance fee of sh30,000 (VIP stands) and sh10, 000 (general entrance), revellers will be treated to a lot more than just the catwalk.

There is an array of local artistes to flavour up the show. These include Bebe Cool, Bobi Wine, the Blue*3, Ngoni, Ragga Dee, Mega Dee, Obsessions, Sweet Kid, KS Alpha, Amarula Family, Chagga and Peter Miles. CBS FM presenter Leila Kalanzi will be the MC.
Denis Kateera, the MUBS guild minister of social affairs, says about 12 girls have confirmed taking part in the contest for a brand new Toyota Celica car, the top prize.

Other prizes include a full Home Theatre for the first runner-up and a fully connected mobile phone for the second and third runners-up. The girls are undergoing training at Ivy’s Hotel.
The theme of this year’s pageant is ‘Beauty with an Entreprenuership Mind in the New African Woman’.

Kateera says the Miss MUBS contest is also an event that showcases the potential of young ladies in higher institutions of learning. It is with that in mind that the event was created to capture the glamour and elegance of society as well as present the African woman not only as a symbol of beauty, but also as a leader in society able to articulate social issues with little or no bias. The contest aims at portraying the African woman as beautiful in body, mind and soul.

But the winner does not take it all. Kateera says all the students who participate in Miss MUBS, organisers and revellers will benefit in a way.

“Miss MUBS not only encompasses the social duties of the guild and the school, but also brings the school closer to the business and non-business societies that we mix with during and after the pageant. It also instills a competitive spirit, organisation skills and ideas among students in vast fields that the event will encompass,” he says.

Kateera says they want to protect and keep the image of the institution, which had been tainted in previous beauty pageants. The winner will promote charity causes like HIV/AIDS awareness, which the 2005/06 Miss MUBS Rebecca Akiteng, has been promoting with a sh5m budget.
