THE United Nations Agency for International Development (USAID) in partnership with the Uganda Scouts Association (USA) has launched a project, Scouting For Solutions (SFS), to fight HIV/AIDS, reports Irene Nabusoba.
The USAID programme management specialist on HIV/AIDS, Herbert Mugumya, said the SFS project, which focuses on increasing the numbers of girl-guides, would strive to involve parents.
“We are supporting this project basing on the progress made in the fight against HIV/AIDS by delaying the onset of sex and preaching abstinence,” Mugumya said.
He said scouts focus on adolescents, who are vulnerable to HIV/AIDS and early pregnancies by encouraging good behaviour. “Scouting has contributed to the progress made in the fight against HIV/AIDS through teaching life skills and encouraging discipline which reduces vulnerability of youth to risky behaviour,” he said.
