THE Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) president, Miria Kalule Obote, was on Saturday among hundreds of mourners who turned up for the funeral of former Kyaggwe UPC leader Abisaagi Muwonge, reports Geresom Musamali.

The funeral at Kyabazala in Ntunda sub-county near Kayunga, was one of the first public functions Miria was appearing at since losing the February 23 presidential polls.

Muwonge and her husband, the late Biridadi Muwonge, battled to keep Kyaggwe (Mukono district) and Bugerere (Kayunga) out of the National Resistance Movement/Army (NRM/A) areas of control in the 1980s when the late Apollo Milton Obote was president and Yoweri Museveni the NRM/A guerrilla leader had a stronghold in Bulemezi (Luweero and Nakaseke).

Other UPC leaders in Bugerere and Kyaggwe at the time included the Rev. Dr. Kefa Ssempangi, the current Ntenjeru South (Kayunga) MP.

Miria said, “The Muwonges played a vital role during the difficult times when we were in power. UPC has sent me to convey to the family our heartfelt condolences. We pray that the deceased’s soul rests in peace.”

Ssempangi said, “The Muwonges did a lot to fight for the freedom we are enjoying. They showed an extra-ordinary leadership spirit which many of us can never fully emulate.”
