Makerere University awards poetry writers

FIVE Makerere University students have won cash awards in the the first Makerere University Postgraduate Students Essay and Poetry writing competition.

FIVE Makerere University students have won cash awards in the the first Makerere University Postgraduate Students Essay and Poetry writing competition.

The event at the university last week was organised by the School of Graduate Studies in conjunction with the Gender Mainstreaming Sentinel Site Committee on the theme “Ensuring Gender Equality and Equity concerns in Africa.”

The competition attracted participants from all faculties and departments with the aim of generating ideas through debate that will guide the formulation of policies that are gender responsive.

“This occasion is a landmark and it could change thought processes even in other universities,” Dr. Susan Kiguli said while representing a team of expert judges of the competition.

The winners, who got prizes ranging from sh30,000 to sh150,000 each were; Joseph Munyaneza, Sr. Lucy Nabukonde, Kenedy Rwothugeyu Bomba, Linda Ogwell and Tom Ogwang.
More than a-half of the entries received for the competition were in the field of poetry and most competitors were from the Department of Mass Communication.

Out of 16 outstanding works of literature, five were selected to receive certificates and cash.
