Two LRA rebels were on Friday killed by UPDF soldiers along Buluji river in Lagoro sub-county Kitgum district.
The 5th Division public relations officer, Lt. Deo Akiiki, said the rebels had earlier tried to attack Kitgum Matidi IDP camp, where they shot and wounded an LDU staff, private David Nyeko.
Nyeko’s lower jaw was injured by the bullets and he is now getting treatment at Lacor Hospital in Gulu district.
Akiiki said the rebels had been trying to attack the camp but they feared UPDF soldiers.
He said the rebels attacked at midnight and when they saw Nyeko, they shot his lower jaw, but the UPDF followed them up and caught up with them, killing two and the rest ran in disarray.
Akiiki (above) said the UPDF soldiers recovered two SMG guns with 60 bullets but several looted properties were abandoned by the rebels as they fled.
Resident district commissioner Lt. Santos Okot Lapolo said the rebels that attacked the IDP camp were part of the few that had been moving around and they were not a threat to the UPDF soldiers on the ground.
Lapolo said the rebels had reduced, adding that NGOs (above) operating in Kitgum district could move without escorts.
