THE decision by Makerere University to scale down the intake of private students is a move in the right direction.

THE decision by Makerere University to scale down the intake of private students is a move in the right direction.

Makerere was one of the most respectable universities in Africa and beyond, but the political turmoil of the 1970s and the economic decline that followed later have taken their toll on the standards of this once famous institution of higher learning.

The private sponsorship programme introduced in the early 1990s in a bid to bridge the funding gap, resulted into an influx of students.

Without matching expansion in facilities and human resources, concerns have been raised as to whether this premier university is till offering quality education.

While a Visitation Committee has been appointed to probe into the problems of the four public universities including Mbarara, Kyambogo and Gulu, it is gratifying to see that Makerere has not sat back but is doing something to address some of these concerns.

This example should be emulated by particularly private universities some of which are established for profit motives. Well done Makerere.
