Manafwa district local government has postponed the payment of teachers’ April salaries. Chief administrative officer Anthony Weasa on Monday said a shortfall in the funds sent by the central government made it difficult for the district to pay the salaries.

“We had a shortfall of sh214m for secondary and primary school teachers’ salaries,” Weasa said.

He said the Ministry of Finance had promised to send additional funds to the district in a week.

Weasa said the district had been receiving sh500m for primary and sh130m for secondary school teachers’ salaries.

He said the district also had a shortfall of sh21m in unconditional grants for salaries for traditional civil servants.

“We, however, managed to top up the money with the graduated tax compensation to pay the salaries for the traditional civil servants,” Weasa said.

The district information officer, James Kutosi, said some temporary staff were paid 50% of their salaries.

“Some of the assignment staff who did not receive their salaries for March have only been paid 50% for April,” Kutosi said.

He said those affected included sub-accountants and community development officers.
