US$110m (sh201b) was earned from fish exports last year, the Private Sector Foundation’s director for policy advocacy has said.
“In 2002, the sector accounted for nearly 17.3% of the exports, with an export revenue of $100m (sh183b) in 2004,” Gideon Bagadawa said.
This was during a presentation on the theme, “The state of the private sector in Uganda,” at a seminar at the Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA) conference hall in Lugogo, Kampala, recently.
“The fisheries sector contributes a lot to employment and incomes of rural households. There are more than 40,000 fishermen, while about 700,000 people are employed in ancillary activities,” he said.
Bagadawa said the private sector is still in its formative stages and estimated to comprise 1,000,300 enterprises, of which 80%-90% are small.
He said small and medium enterprises account for 95% of the business community in the country.
“Their activities represent on average of 75% of the annual gross domestic product. They employ over 80% of the workforce and produce largely for the domestic market,” Bagadawa said.
