THIRTEEN Internally Displaced People (IDP) were on Monday shot dead by an Amuka militiaman and 28 others seriously wounded in Ogwete IDPs camp in Lira district.

Wilson Oluge, a camp leader, identified the assailant as Peter Okullo, who has since been arrested and detained at the Olilim army detachment.

Okullo was attached to Ogwete IDP camp bordering Katakwi district.

The incident occurred at around 4:00am on Monday morning.

Lira resident district commissioner Joan Pacoto said, “I got the shocking report that an Amuka shot dead over 13 people in Ogwete camp.”

“I don’t know the cause of the shooting. Some security personnel plus the UPDF have gone to establish the cause,” Pacoto added.

The district Police commander, Ivan Nkwasibwe, said detectives were sent to the scene to record statements from witnesses.

Otuke MP Daniel Omara Atubo rushed to Nkwasibwe’s office and held a brief meeting with him.

Witnesses at the camp said Okullo was enraged after being questioned over adultery. He picked up his gun and started shooting anybody in sight.

Atubo said Okullo had a mental illness. Other conflicting reports said Okullo was a renowned drunkard.

Pacoto identified the dead as James Odongo, J.B. Ojuka, Joseph Olweny, Lameck Ongom, Janet Apio, Yuventino Yamo, Tony Okello and Sophia Adongo, who was pregnant.

Others were Richard Odwar, Tom Eyekere and Charles Ongom. Two people were not identified.

Those who were seriously wounded were Moses Ogwang, Julius Opua, Harriet Akec, Symposia Adongo, Esther Acabo and Charles Agengo.

Others were identified as Lino Ebicaco and Richard Ojuka.

Camp leader Oluge said the death toll could rise since some people were critically wounded.

UPDF soldiers rushed to the scene and transported the injured to Lira Hospital.
