By Norman Katende UGANDA could be among the beneficiaries of world soccer governing body, FIFA’s decision to construct modern stadiums with artificial turf in Africa, if they are able to secure land.
During the FIFA Congress in Germany, African countries were requested to identify land where the stadiums can be constructed. FIFA pledged to do the rest.
“FIFA is targeting rotation of matches where African teams will be able to play in Europe and vice versa. They are looking at uniform grounds and that is why they want to use artificial turf stadium,” explained FUFA CEO Charles Masembe.
FUFA’s task now is to identify a good piece of land similar to where Namboole is situated.
“It should be wrangle-free, easily accessible and with a land title. If we prove this, then we will forward it to FIFA. They will effectively take charge thereafter,” explained Masembe.
He said that FIFA was also planning to construct stadiums for the youth in Africa, to take them away from those used by adults.
