THE US government will provide $3m (about sh5.6b) to facilitate the development of the dairy industry.
Steven Browning, the US ambassador, who closed the recently-concluded second African Dairy Conference and Exhibition at Speke Resort and Country Lodge Munyonyo, said the funds would facilitate product processing, distribution and personnel training.
“I am aware that Uganda’s dairy sector requires assistance especially in training. I am also aware that around $8.3m has been spent in training of dairy processors and cattle keepers.
“My government will commit $3m to develop the industry,” said Browning.
He said around 6.3 million Ugandans earn daily income through cattle grazing and dairy products.
Browning said for this reason, strong efforts were needed to develop the industry.
“As it is a policy in the country that the Government is moving out of business, the private sector needs to be promoted.
“The US Congress knows how the dairy sector is important and it will continue supporting it,” he said.
Browning said the US government was interested in working with the Eastern and Southern Africa Dairy Association to develop the dairy sector in the region.
The association organised the exhibition.
