AGRICULTURE minister, Hilary Onek, wants the three East African countries to adopt a common plan to stem out the fishing of premature fish.
The minister was on Friday speaking at the Sixth Council of Ministers of Lake Victoria Fisheries Organisation (LVFO) at Speke Resort Munyonyo.
The meeting was attended Joseph Munyao, the Kenyan livestock and fisheries development minister, Anthony Diallo, the Tanzanian natural resources and tourism minister and permanent secretaries of the three countries, the FAO and European Union representatives among other dignitaries.
“With population increasing at about 3% annually, we need actions that can lead to increase in fish production. Fish is rich in proteins and its of high importance to the three East African countries.
“It is our duty to guide and protect the lake for future generations,†said Onek.
Thomas Masembe, the LVFO executive secretary, expressed concern about the declining water levels in Lake Victoria, which he said, was threatening the breeding and the landing sites.
The council agreed that partner states facilitate mainstreaming of HIV/AIDS programmes for fishing communities into national programmes and LVFO Secretariat establishs and implements a sustainable funding mechanism for fisheries research, development and management.
