VICE-President Prof. Gilbert Bukenya has challenged investors in the construction industry to assist the Government alleviate the critical housing shortage, especially in the rural areas.

The three-day 4th Annual Construction Exhibition by local and foreign investors opened at the Uganda Manufacturers’ Association Show Ground at Lugogo on Thursday with the theme: “Infrastructure - A Catalyst to Economic Growth, Social Development and Global Competitiveness.”

“This year’s theme will, however, be more meaningful when the construction industry caters for the rural habitants 80% of whom reside and work on farmlands,” Bukenya said in a speech read by state minister in the Vice-President’s Office, James Baba.

Bukenya, a low-cost housing advocate, said, “I have taken keen interest in transforming the living standards of the rural man by empowering him, through growing of upland rice, to acquire modest but decent housing units.”

“Such a fully-equipped housing unit constitutes the core of social transformation and development for the grass-root person,” he said.
