THE passport control officer at the Immigration Department, Wilberforce Ngonde, was yesterday arrested following a Monday raid on the department by the Police, which culminated in the arrest of two other officials.
Police said the arrests were part of a deeper investigation into the fake passports saga.

Ngonde was arrested and detained after he presented himself at the Central Police Station in the morning, following summons.
He was one of the officials targeted to be picked on Monday but had survived.

There was panic at the department located at the Ministry of Internal Affairs headquarters on Monday when the Police arrested Demo beyagira, the acting principal immigration officer at entebbe International airport and Alfred turwakwo, an office messenger.

Sources said Ngonde was detained after being interrogated. Kampala CID chief Moses Sakira yesterday said the Police were investigating anomalies in the issuance of passports.

The arrests followed allegations of passport fraud and failure by the officials to account for many of the documents, Sakira said.

Last month, the Police moved into the department and arrested two senior officials. One other official later presented himself in court. All the three were charged and remanded.

Earlier this year, the CID launched investigations into the department in connection with a Rwanda passport saga. Several key officials were quizzed over the matter.
