THE Ministry of Energy is to extend electricity to Moroto district, minister Daudi Migereko has said.
Migereko said his ministry had entered into discussions with the World Bank to secure funding to extend electricity to the district as a permanent solution to power problems in the area.
Moroto district currently relies on thermal power provided by heavy diesel generators.
A statement issued by the Ministry of Energy said Migereko made the pledge while meeting a delegation from Moroto district last week. Robert Nambafu, the Resident District Commissioner and the area MP, Terence Achia, led the delegation.
The statement said Migereko and the Moroto delegation agreed that as an immediate measure to salvage the electricity situation in the area, the generator at Moroto district headquarters would be repaired to cater for hospitals and water supply in the area.
Simon D’Ujanga, the minister of state for energy and the permanent secretary, Kabagambe Kaliisa, attended the meeting.
