UNBELIEVABLE even to himself, Riyaz Kurji made the greatest fight-back in rallying history to finish second behind winner Azar Anwar in the sixth round of the Kenya Commercial Bank S&L rally in Kajiado yesterday.
The Ugandan shrugged off a two-minute and 10 seconds penalty imposed on him for checking in late on Saturday to secure an impressive second position after taking 19th and last position after the 1.5km spectator stage in Nairobi’s sprawling Mukuru slums in Industrial area Saturday.
He had won the season opener of the Kenya National Rally Championships series in February in Naivasha and finished seventh in the fifth. However, despite driving with the burden of the penalty, he buried the mishap to stun his Kenyan challengers with a second podium finish.
It was a satisfactory result for the Ugandan after the two minutes and 10 seconds penalty for his failure to wear rally gear at the start of the event.
