SIR — It is unfortunate that the government can spend over sh900m on claims from human rights violation yet so many supporters of the same government claim that there is democracy and freedom of all kinds.

I think these are clear signs of an autocratic government where so many people are being denied the right to personal liberty.

The government should do something about the issues raised by the human rights commission otherwise we shall continue losing a lot of money on avoidable mistakes. This money could be put to better use like helping the needy and people in IDP camps instead of being wasted on unnecessary compensations.

The government ought to understand that every person has a right to personal liberty, freedom to information, right to justice and right to own property that are not guaranteed by the state. It is therefore the duty of the state to ensure that these rights are maintained and enjoyed by all the people regardless of age, status, religion or political party.
