THE absence of rival George Olayo from the Tororo Golf Open at the weekend played in the hands of Stephen ‘Tiger Woods’ Birungi in more ways than one.

THE absence of rival George Olayo from the Tororo Golf Open at the weekend played in the hands of Stephen ‘Tiger Woods’ Birungi in more ways than one.
Without the usual Olayo challenge Birungi was not only able to recover from a disastrous opening round to capture victory but also opened up an eight-point lead in the Uganda Golf Union (UGU) stroke-play championship table.
Birungi confessed he had beaten a feeble field.
“I am not excited about this victory because my score was not good at all. Despite being my first time on the course, I didn’t expect such a poor score. I won because it wasn’t competitive.
“If Olayo was there it would have been a tight contest. Even when I trailed by three strokes I knew I would bounce back. The only person who posed a bit of a threat was the old man from Kenya (James Abira) because he is experienced,†Birungi commented.
Birungi shot 82 on day one before carding 76 in the final round to pip Abira by one stroke as day one leader Brian Mwesigwa, a promising golfer, slipped to ninth.
But contrary to last year’s UGU decision to have all its events played on stroke-play format, organisers announced Shaan Patel (h/c 28) with 141nett as overall winner of the Tororo Cement sponsored event.
