TOP seed Pierre Kamugasha and partner Tonny Lakony are the champions of the Pilsner National Beach Volleyball Championships after beating Hannington Nsubuga and Gadaffi Tamale 2-1 at Lido Beach Resort Sunday.

Towering Kamugasha and Lakony, who sailed to the final with ease, took the first set 21-18, lost the second 16-21 before recovering to win the decisive set 15-11 in a final that lasted one hour.

Lakony, who was facing former partner Nsubuga with whom they ruled the sands for two successive seasons, panicked at the start but settled after winning the first set.

Nsubuga and Tamale had beaten Luke Eittit and Warren Muhangi to make the final, while Kamugasha and Lakony defeated Andrew Kalyegira and Godwin Ssenyondo.

The big number of fans that cheered Diana Agaba and Josephine Namanda could not inspire them against top seed Sophie Nanyonga and on-form Shila Omuriwe, who easily won the final 21-18, 21-18.

Namanda and Agaba stopped new comers Sharon Pajije and Prossy Alobo 21-14, 21-8 in the first semi-final while Agaba and Namanda ended seed two Mercy Tabitha and Andrina Namata in the other 21-15, 21-17.

A record 33 teams thronged Lido Beach for the Club Pilsner sponsored event prompting Nile Breweries sales manager Conrad Kizito to promise a better package in October.
