THE Ministry of Health has said men are entitled to paternal leave under a new law that came into force last month.
The acting director general of health services, Dr. Sam Okware (right), said the paternal and maternal leave became effective on August 7 2006 in private and public institutions, advising the recipients to utilise them.
Speaking at a workshop on the World breastfeeding Week at Hotel Africana on Wednesday, Okware said maternal leave had increased from 45 calendar days to 60 working days.
He cautioned fathers against using the paternal leave to relocating to new pastures instead of providing care to the breastfeeding mothers and babies.
“But to the exceptions of the Muslims who are privileged to marry four wives, the law provides that they attain their paternal leave of 16 days if at all the four wives give birth the same year,” Okware noted.
