SIR — A lot needs to be done about the quality of service in Jinja hospital. Jinja is a referral hospital for the seven districts of Busoga region and also part of Mukono and Kayunga. I hope the Ministry of Health will take urgent action.

Most buildings are in a very sorry state. only the theatre is properly built. The medical superintendent of Jinja also doubles as the health minister in the Kyabazinga government. He is also the Kyabazinga’s personal doctor.

Are civil servants allowed to be ministers in traditional institutions? How are the efficiency issues here addressed?
The hospital is scantly staffed. Most of the specialist and consultant staff reside in Kampala. One of the major reasons is lack of accommodation.

The referral hospital for about four million people has only one physician!

Many of the junior staff, especially medical officers and interns who went for postgraduate training never returned and were never replaced. The hospital has no ultrasound machine or x-ray while the laboratory is non- functional. Most of the patients have to be referred to the nearby private health units. Lack of drugs is a chronic problem.

Then there is the problem of power! Why on earth would a hospital ever be load-shed? Jinja hospital is loadshed at least four days a week and has no generator!
