THE Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels have urged the government to ask the International criminal Court (ICC) to drop the indictment charges against their top commanders.
A rebel who identified himself as Lt. Awal pa Mon (women’s guard) told The New Vision in the bush in Atanga sub-county, Pader district that the rebels were not happy with the international court’s involvement in the northern Uganda conflict.
“This is a family problem which started from within Uganda and must be solved by Ugandans,” he said, adding that “We shall not come out of the bush if our leaders are still in danger. We shall have no option but to continue fighting until we overthrow the government and restore total security for the Acholi,” Mon said.
Mon was one of the rebels under Brig. Dominic ongwen who on Monday met senior UPDF officers and Gulu leaders at Lawii-Adul. Ongwen is one of the five top LRA leaders indicted by the ICC.
The government has, however, assured the LRA top commanders of amnesty if they come out of the bush after signing of the peace talks deal.
