AGING but alive and well, Jinja is turning 100.
Preparations to commemorate a century of Jinja’s existence as a town and 50 years as a municipality are in high gear.
A working committee was constituted by the Jinja Municipal Council to plan the event. It comprises political and technical staff, senior citizens and other consultants.
President Yoweri museveni (below) is expected to officiate at the centenary celebrations and also launch the Jinja Municipal Council comprehensive strategic plan. The ceremony is estimated to to cost sh500m.
The mayor Mohammed Kezaala said the centenary/jubilee celebrations would take place on December 8, under the theme: “Jinja 100 years - towards a city status.”
Kezaala emphasised the need for proper land management, infrastructural development and improvement in the education sector in Jinja.
“The people of Jinja do not have to first eat rats to get a city status. All that we have to do is to put the requites of a city in place,” he said during a council meeting at the Council chambers on Thursday.
