NINE wetlands were recently declared as areas of international importance (Ramsar sites), reports Gerald Tenywa.

Thousands of residents around the wetlands could have their fortunes change for the better following the declaration.

The addition of the new wetlands brings the national Ramsar sites to 11 as Lake George and Lake Nabugabo achieved the global protection status earlier.

Paul Mafabi of the wetlands inspection division in the environment ministry, said there was conservation concern and greater priority worldwide to provide funding to initiatives around Ramsar sites.

Ramsar sites are wetlands set aside for conservation and wise use under a global intergovernmental agreement that acts as a framework for protection of wetlands.
