Avoid nuclear arms race

NORTH Korea has flouted world opinion and tested a nuclear device. Experts say that it is highly unlikely that the bomb could be mounted onto a missile but that it could possibly be carried in an airplane.

However outdated North Korean bombers would quickly be spotted on radar and intercepted. The North Korean bomb therefore poses no substantial threat to any neighbouring country.

Nevertheless the test could potentially set off a new nuclear arms race in eastern Asia with countries like South Korea, Taiwan and even Japan developing nuclear weapons for purposes of defence. But it is not in the best interests of world peace for a new wave of nations to develop nuclear weapons.

North Korea’s neighbours should stay calm and not precipitate any new nuclear arms race.
