SIR — On October 13, the New vision revealed that there are 6441 ghost workers in public service! For most public service jobs, vacancies are always advertised and young Ugandans hunting for jobs apply.

However, getting shortlisted and being invited for interviews is a nightmare. Could this explain the increasing numbers of ghost workers in government offices and public service? I believe this is the reason. It is easy for someone to use other people’s papers and create a ghost worker!

I call upon the government to put into place procedures that ensure that at least every person who applies for a job in public service gets a reply whether offered a job or not, as this will ascertain that their name is not being used by someone somewhere to earn free money. It is very common today to find someone with proper qualifications applying for more than 20 jobs without getting a reply even for one!

This is another form of brain- drain and the government should stop blaming doctors running to developed countries for jobs. Only people doing actual work should be paid. The ghost workers and those who facilitate them should be hunted down ruthlessly and punished. The names of ghost workers should be published.

many people can even get to know who has been using their names when they themselves are actually jobless! The minister of Public Service, Mr Muganwa Kajura (right) should unearth this rot.
