Forty-Five Makerere University students were yesterday charged with taking part in a riot. The students were charged as an uneasy calm returned to the campus, a day after clashes between students and the anti-riot police.

Forty-Five Makerere University students were yesterday charged with taking part in a riot.

The students were charged as an uneasy calm returned to the campus, a day after clashes between students and the anti-riot police.

a university lecturers’ strike degenerated into chaos on Tuesday, culminating in the arrest of the students.

Among those charged was Ivan Kairu, a student of Economics, who was also charged with shop-breaking.

He allegedly stole shop items estimated at sh4.3m from Didas Nguma, a Wandegeya businessman.

The students denied the charges before Buganda Road Court Chief magistrate Margaret Tibulya, who remanded them until tomorrow when they are expected to apply for bail.

She remanded them after two students protested that they did not understand the charge and demanded for an interpreter in Ateso.
