A rice processing plant worth sh42m has opened in kamwenge district, reports John Nzinjah.

Funds for the plant were secured from McKnight foundation, a charity in the US, through the Kabarole Research and Resource Centre.

Over 450 farmers under the Community Sustainable Initiative Link (COSIL) sought for the project.

COSIL director, the Rev. Michael Kitoke, said 350 farmers were committed to up-land rice growing.

He said the plant in Mahyoro village, aims at boosting production of the crop to fight poverty.

“We decided to go for up-land rice growing because it has market. We are seeing results because some of the families engaged in the project have seen improvement in their incomes,” Kitoke said.

He said the farmers are organised into 20 groups, which have collection centres from where the produce is ferried to the processing plant.

Kitoke said the farmers are given seeds from a seed bank developed by COSIL.
