RAFU hasn’t delivered!

SIR — After various complaints on the state of the Iganga-Jinja road, the Road Agency Formation Unit (RAFU) made a public announcement that the road contractor, RCC, is one of the best in the country and that civil works are ahead of schedule.

He promised that the contractor will in mid- October move to the worst part of the road, the six-kilometre Bulanga-Musiita section. However, it is now nearly end of November and nothing has been done! This section is terrible. To begin with, the area is both bad during the rainy and the dry season. In the dry season, one drives for almost 20 minutes without proper vision because of the clouds of dust. In the rainy season, it is mud and potholes.

I have done some research and discovered that RAFU was only playing a public relations gimic. Senior staff in RCC have told me that there are no plans at all for the contractor to move to this section. And since they did not move there in October as RAFU promised, one can easily confirm our fears.

One wonders whether RAFU and the ministry of works care about the public or not.

As one writer noted in an earlier article in the press, there seems to be no ethics at all. Even RAFU which should be protecting public interest is now covering up for the contractor!

We demand justice and that this road be repaired for public good. It has been two years of suffering with accidents, deaths, dust, mud, potholes, and breakdown of vehicles. I have personally been a victim of this road many times. For instance, I have lost two windscreens to flying stones, three tyres to potholes, and several pairs of shock absorbers. In other words, it is only by the grace of God that we survive on this road. Of course we should not forget the increased fuel cost.

We are tired of inefficient government ministries and parastatals. It is time the authorities concerned intervened. We cannot bear this pain any longer. Should nothing be done, we will have no choice but mobilise for a public demonstration.
