FOUR foreign university teams arrived yesterday ahead of today’s East African university games official opening at Namboole.

FOUR foreign university teams arrived yesterday ahead of today’s East African university games official opening at Namboole, reports Norman Katende.

University of Nairobi and Catholic University, both from Kenya, and Tanzanian University of Dar es Salaam and Muzumbe University are in town. More teams were still expected from Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda.

“We are expecting more teams to arrive for the week-long games. We offered to stand in and we will surely stage better games,” NUSFU treasurer Patrick Ssebuliba reiterated at the accreditation centre at Lugogo.

Uganda stepped in at the last minute to host the event after Rwanda pulled out last month. Kampala is preparing to host the Africa university games in 2008.

Twenty-three universities are set to participate in the event. competitions will be in 12 disciplines; rugby, chess, athletics, basketball, netball, soccer, handball, table tennis, swimming, badminton, volleyball and tennis.
Several universities are however, to miss the event due to clashes with their governments.

This include Kenyatta University and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture (Kenya), Kigali Institute of Science and Technology (Rwanda) and Makerere (Uganda).
