THE 450 political mobilisers laid off by the defunct Movement Secretariat have been paid.
They have been demanding their terminal benefits for more than a year.

The 1995 Constitution demanded that the Secretariat winds up on February 22, the day before the 2006 general elections to pave way for a multiparty dispensation.

President Museveni’s special assistant for political affairs, Major Jacob Asiimwe, said, “We have been paying them since the beginning of this month. Sh3b has been made available.

“The sh3b was their terminal benefits after their contracts were terminated due to the change in political system. To have this group paid is one of the main things that I was tasked to handle soon as I was appointed to this job.

“The group includes 15 directors and their deputies. We are very happy with the exercise.”

“Each one of them is being paid one month’s salary times the number of years they served the Movement and the country. Sh2.4b was paid out in April this year for transport, medical and other dues.

The sh2.4b was a court award they got after they took government to court,” Asiimwe added.

Among the beneficiaries are directors Kirunda Kivejinja, Ofwono Opondo, Magode Ikuya, Dr. Fabius Byaruhanga, Obiga Kania and Capt. Henry Matsiko.
