Construction of the Kenya-Uganda oil pipeline will start in the second half of 2007, the two governments have announced, writes Mikaili Sseppuya.

Kiraitu Murungi, the Kenya energy minister and his Ugandan counterpart, Daudi Migereko, also confirmed the awarding of the deal to the Tamoil Group during a meeting in Nairobi.

Tamoil’s lead counsels, Lex Uganda Advocates & Solicitors, said in a statement that the commercial operation of the pipeline would start during third quarter of 2008.

The benefits of the pipeline when completed will be a lower tariff for transporting petroleum fuels, reduction of road maintenance costs, accidents and environmental pollution.
