The LC5 chairman, Assuman Kyafu, is confident of winning the 2011 elections. This followed his victory in an election petition filed against him by Shaban Nkuutu, the runner-up in the March 3 polls. Kyafu was speaking at the opening of a Front Page Micro-finance branch in the town on Saturday. Kyafu said he would seek sh300m in compensation. He said he would use part of the money to buy shares in the micro-finance company. Nkuutu had alleged that there were election malpractices.

A local charity, Jenga Community Development Outreach, on Saturday hosted over 1,200 widows and orphans to a Christmas lunch. The charity director, Robbie Keen, said: “We want people to know that Jesus loves widows and orphans.†He said they had initiated income-generating projects for widows in Mbale town. “We have given them goats,†Keen said.
