Egypt has given $18.4m (sh32b) for the removal of the water hyacinth, an official of the Uganda-Egypt Aquatic Weed Control Project has said.

“We have so far removed 70,000 tonnes of the weed from lakes Victoria, Albert and Kyoga using the $13.9m (sh24.8b) that was allocated by Egypt in 1999,” the project’s engineer, Ali Ibrahim, elaborated.

“However, Egypt recently approved another $4.5m (sh8b) that extended the project for the next three years from 2007 to 2009, bringing the total to $18.4m(sh32.8b). We shall rehabilitate more fish landing sites and continue removing the weed,” he said. Ibrahim was speaking at a meeting with the Kyabazinga of Busoga, Henry Wako Muloki in Bugembe, Jinja.

Muloki said hailed Egypt for the support.
