INITIATION of community-based projects in society requires active mobilisation of the community. The adult and community education programme gives you community education skills to enable you understand and communicate with adults in the community. Adult education targets adults and learning is either individual or group- based.

The adult and community education programme covers a range of skills:
Psychology of adult learning.
Conflict and community-based disaster management.
Community development and communication skills.
Project planning and management.
Counselling of adult learners.
Gender and adult education.
Entrepreneurship skills.
Management of micro- finance projects.

Training:

  • The Institute of Adult and Continuing Education, Department of Adult Education and Communication Studies, Makerere University offers a Bachelor of Adult and Community Education degree course.

  • Faculty of Special Needs and Rehabilitation, department of Adult and Community Education, Kyambogo University also offers the course.


  • Requirements:

    You need two principal passes and a subsidiary in either arts or sciences to pursue the course.
  • Community education work deals with people. You must love people and be able to work in the local community.

  • You need social skills and ability to work in a team.

  • You must enjoy helping people change their attitudes and improve their livelihood.


  • Career opportunities:

    Many organisations use in-house training to help their staff acquire the necessary skills. According to Peter Musibala, the head of the department of Adult and Community Education at Kyambogo, this programme opens the eyes of graduates to see jobs around them, especially opportunities in their communities.
    Non-governmental organisations also need adult educators to help the community change their attitude and build capacity at grass root levels.
    Graduates of this programme can work well in the local governments as community development officers.

    Opportunities are also available in the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, NGOs especially for community-based initiatives, banks and companies as trainers. Graduates can help draw up training manuals that can improve the training methods in organisations like banks and companies.
    Graduates can also write project proposals, initiate community projects and attract donor funding for community-based projects.

    Salary scales for graduates vary depending on the organisations that hire them and the kind of work they do.
    Non-governmental organisations, banks or companies pay the graduates between sh500,000 and sh700,000 per month.
