Conductors should wear seatbelts too

SIR — It is unfair for the traffic police to arrest some people and let others off scot-free over the seat-belt regulation. The law must be obeyed by everyone who travels in a vehicle.

SIR — It is unfair for the traffic police to arrest some people and let others off scot-free over the seat-belt regulation. The law must be obeyed by everyone who travels in a vehicle.

I see no reason why it does not apply equally to conductors in kamunyes. The conductors are not immune to accidents.

Besides it would relieve the passengers who are forced to to add an extra person to the space meant for only three. I am yet to see a ‘one-belt-fits-two’ scenario and yet the conductor usually ends up taking the best part of the shared seat leaving the paying passenger sitting uncomfortably! The failure by the authorities to come up with a solution for this problem suggests that it is the bigwigs who control the transport industry and do it in an unfair manner.

The conductors can flout the law and get away with it because the law enforcers are either in cahoots with them or are just plain scared.

But when all is said and done, we are waiting for the decision on exactly how many seat-belts a PSV should have and who is exempted from wearing one.

It should be noted that in case of an accident, a passenger who is not buckled up is a danger to those who are because he will act like a missile as he is hurled by the force of impact in a speeding vehicle.
