WILD screams filled the air while blood and broken glass littered the Masaka highway where a Kayunga district LC5 councillor died on the way from President Yoweri Museveni’s home in Rwakitura on Friday.
Joseph Yiga Mukasa, the Galilaya sub-county councillor, died on the spot when he was run over by a vehicle at Lwera, 34km on the Masaka-Kampala highway, as he crossed the road after a stop-over for a short call. He was among 100 local leaders who met the President at his home.
The Mitsubishi Delica vehicle number UAF 715F, belonging to the Special Revenue Protection Services, was driven by Asuman Musoke. It pulled him some metres away and crushed his head.
Masaka deputy traffic officer James Rumanyika said the accident occurred at about 12:30pm. He said Mukasa, who was travelling with his colleagues in a Coaster number UAF 446Q, was the only one who crossed the road.
Mukasa’s colleagues said he had just called his wife, Rose Nakalawa, and told her about their successful journey.
The Police took the body to Masaka Hospital for a post-mortem and later handed it over to the councillors.
The district vice-chairman, Kalema Bunaanyuma, who was in the same vehicle, said other councillors, religious, opinion and Movement leaders, were following the Coaster.
