Kampala City Council (KCC) has not reduced market dues at St. Balukuddembe (Owino) Market despite pledges to do so, reports Caroline Arinaitwe.

“We protested last month and they promised to reduce the rates, but they have not. KCC should honour their pledge,” Sarah Babirye, a trader, said recently.

The traders complained about the increase of 2005’s rental charges because it would reduce their profits.

“KCC charges high dues, yet they have not provided better services like security lights and path clearance to reduce congestion and improve the drainage,” Fred Ssonko, a trader, said.

“Rent for stalls was increased to sh13,500 from sh9,000, while local service fee rose to sh15,000 from sh7,000. Daily dues are at sh500 from sh400. The tax burden will be passed to consumers,” Ssonko said.

Herbert Bashasha, the traders’ manager, said the traders need better services to enhance their businesses.
