AN Italian NGO, Associazione Centro Aiuti volontari (ACAV), has began a project to market farmers’ produce in Arua and Nebbi districts.

The Rome-based ACAV president, Geremie Gios, on a visit to Uganda, said his organisation had assisted farmers to revitalise an association, APROMACS, which began in 1995 but collapsed.
“Rural farmers have problems of marketing their crops. They are often forced to sell their products at very low prices to traders who aim at maximising profits. ACAV is helping farmers to market their products in a gainful manner,” Gios said in an interview.

He said ACAV planned to spread to the whole country. Currently, ACAV has concentrated in West Nile and Teso regions.

ACAV distributes improved seeds like cassava, onions, maize and beans. The organisation also encourages fish farming by helping to establish fish ponds and distribute fish fry. It also distributes farming equipment like hoes.
