THE Government is considering salary increment for support and administrative staff at the four public universities, education minister namirembe Bitamazire has said.

She said the vice-chancellors of the universities were asked to provide details on the matter.

Bitamazire led a delegation of technical officials of her ministry, officials from Kyambogo, Makerere and Mbarara universities to answer questions raised by the parliamentary committee on social services.

She said the next stage was to discuss with the Ministry of Finance.

“The Government is already in consultations discussing enhancement of salaries for support and administrative staff at the four public universities,” she said.

Bitamazire had been called to brief MPs about the operations of Kyambogo University, the quota system and the current admission procedure, rationalisation of fees structure in government secondary schools, the status of Makerere University Business School (MUBS) and the taxation of private institutions.

MPs and staff at Kyambogo demanded a commission of inquiry into the administration of the university.

They warned of a simmering strike at the university. The staff concerns raised by Teopista Sentongo (workers) included nepotism, delay to appoint staff and intimidation.
