The high court has intervened in a land dispute in Mbale district, saving 200 families from being evicted by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).

About 400 residents in Bumbo sub-county had sued UWA, accusing it of grabbing their land while claiming it belongs to Mt. Elgon National Park.
UWA had accused the complainants of encroaching on the park land.

The interim order, signed by the acting deputy Registrar, Musa Musimbi, on April 28, ordered UWA not to conduct any activity on the disputed land for a period for 30 days.

However, the residents petitioned the district chairperson, Bernard Mujasi, who visited the affected families on Monday, saying UWA had defied the interim court order.
