Uganda’s politics will on June 2 be the subject of a daylong discussion in Washington, the US capital between two of Uganda’s harshest critics, writes Vision Reporter.

The key speakers will be former US ambassador to Uganda Johnnie Carson and the University of Iowa’s Professor Joel Barkan. They will debate at the Woodrow Wilson Centre.

“The programme, “Uganda: An African ‘Success’ Past its Prime?” will address the controversy, in and out of Uganda, about the country’s long-term political and economic prospects,” a statement from the centre said.

Last year, Barkan authored a World Bank sponsored report that recommended aid to Uganda be cut over concerns that political events, more specifically the lifting of presidential term limits, would jeorpardise the country’s economy.

Carson is senior vice-president of the National Defence University.
He was also ambassador to Kenya and Zimbabwe.
