SIR — The Minister of Tourism, Trade and Industry, Mr Daudi Migereko, would like to correct the story which appeared in the New Vision of May 2 entitled “Parliament’s Song”.
It was reported in the story that the ministry was “singing the same song all the time” and that the committee had refused to approve the existing sectoral priorities because they were funding the same priorities raised since the beginning of the Seventh Parliament and that they had remained unfunded by the Government.
The minister would like to correct this impression. First of all, the committee did not refuse to approve the funding request of the ministry but rather it was noting with concern the merger of UTB, UIA, UEPB that had not been implemented because of insufficient resources. It is also important to note that the committee was meeting to discuss the ministry’s funding priorities and budget strategies for 2005/2006. the minister is optimistic that what was discussed will make a difference for the ministry. for example, its budget will increase by sh37b in 2005/06 and this will impact heavily on its performance.
The ministry has also earmarked sh2b meant for value addition investment strategy. The minister assured the committee
that the Government had allowed funds for value addition but more funds were being sourced for tourism, and trade promotion.
