THE Government is to revive animal registers in a bid to control disease spread and enhance identification, an official in the agriculture ministry has said.

Charles Kakamwa reports that Chris Rutebarika, the assistant commissioner for disease control, said the programme under the national disease control project would boost record keeping by farmers and the government.

“Farmers are supposed to keep a register of the animals on his farm. This information should also be given to the parish chief, the sub-county chief and the district veterinary officer,” he said, adding that some areas had started implementing the exercise.

Rutebarika was addressing the Jinja district veterinary staff and cattle traders at the district veterinary office on Friday.
He said they would strictly enforce the law and regulate animal movement.

Rutebarika said movement of animals by traders would be authorised by district veterinary officers after examining and ascertaining their health.
